God Help The Sick of our Land The NHS or Hospital Direct Wont!

When will this government ever manage to get anything right? I refer to the latest debacle over the swine flu epidemic. Health Officials managed to create chaos across Yorkshire yesterday after details of centres issuing anti viral drugs were wrongly listed.

A queue of nearly two hundred people built up at the Asda supermarket at Morley near Leeds yesterday! This was because the supermarket was the only centre listed in the city. Some people had travelled as far as twenty miles to obtain their anti viral drugs.

The problem is highly embarrassing for the Government only a day after the website - designed to ease pressure on frontline NHS services - was launched.Officials are urging anyone who believes they have the H1N1 virus to stay at home and seek a diagnosis online or by phone.

You should only contact your doctor or hospital direct if:

· You have a serious underlying illness, such as asthma, diabetes, or heart disease
· You are pregnant
· You have a sick child under one year old
· Your condition suddenly gets much worse, or if their condition is still getting worse after 7 days (5 for a child)

The new self-care service is intended to offer fast access to information and antiviral drugs. Users can check their symptoms and, if necessary, will be given a unique number that will allow them to obtain antiviral drugs.

You should NOT collect these yourself, but rather ask a friend or relative who does not have swine flu, to pick them up.

So what happens if you or I feel “poorly” have a headache or are generally off it if we cannot contact a doctor or hospital direct? What is our National Health Service for then?
