Return of the Natives

I was talking to our eldest daughter this morning. The family have just returned from a marvellous holiday in Tunisia. They stayed at the Thalassa hotel in Monastir.

Monastir the Beach

It turned out that the hotel is owned by a German organisation, and whilst it was superb in all respects, it sounded as though it was run in a very Germanic way! None of the men were allowed to take meals in shorts. Trousers (or jeans) had to be worn at all meal times. If you turned up for a meal in shorts, you were politely escorted from the restaurant, and politely reminded that long trousers or jeans was the dress required!

The Germans staying at the hotel were in the habit of “booking” their sunbeds by laying their towels on them early in the morning, however, Rachel tells me that she discovered that the sunbed attendants could be most helpful in “reserving” them sunbeds as long as they had been tipped!

Having got to know some of the waiters it transpired that although they were well qualified – one had teaching qualifications and had studied in Finland and France, he was unable to leave the country without paying an enormous amount of money to the powers that be. This made me comment “No matter what the state of our country, we still have to be thankful for small mercies!”
